Ontario Child Benefit

The Ontario Child Benefit is a tax-free monthly payment for low- to moderate-income families with children under 18 years of age. It is paid to all eligible recipients whether they work or not.

Am I eligible?

Depending on your family income, you could qualify if you:

  • are the primary caregiver of a child under 18 years of age
  • are a resident of Ontario
  • have filed and had assessed your previous year's personal income tax return – and so has your spouse or common-law partner, if you are married or in a common-law relationship
  • have registered your child for the federal Canada Child Tax Benefit

If you are eligible, the Ontario Child Benefit will be included with your Canada Child Tax Benefit and National Child Benefit Supplement monthly payments.

How much will I receive?

Your payment is based on the number of children under 18 years of age in your family and your adjusted family net income.

The Ontario Child Benefit provides a maximum benefit of $1,100 annually per child.

Prior to July 2011, only one individual was eligible to receive the Ontario Child Benefit in a particular month. Parents who share custody may be receiving benefits on a six-month rotational schedule.

Beginning July 2011, each parent in a shared custody arrangement will receive the Ontario Child Benefit in a particular month. If entitled, you will receive monthly payments equal to 50% of the amount you would have received under the six-month rotational schedule. Over the course of the year, assuming there are no other changes to your family situation, you will receive the same amount as you would under the six-month rotational schedule.

What is adjusted family net income?

This is equal to the sum of the net income amount on line 236 of the personal income tax return for both you and your spouse/common-law partner (if applicable) minus any federal Universal Child Care Benefit payments and Registered Disability Savings Plan income either of you received plus any federal Universal Child Care Benefit payments and Registered Disability Savings Plan income either of you repaid.
