International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA)

Frequently Asked Questions

What is IFTA?

IFTA is an agreement among jurisdictions in Canada and the United States, to simplify the reporting of all motor fuel use taxes (gasoline, diesel, propane, gasohol, methanol, ethanol, natural gas and biodiesel etc), by motor carriers operating in more than one jurisdiction.

The agreement allows interjurisdictional carriers, who operate qualified motor vehicles, to get one fuel tax licence, issued by their home province or state, authorizing them to travel in all IFTA member states.
