Fuel Tax and Gasoline Tax

Frequently Asked Questions About First Nations

I am a First Nations individual. Do I have to pay the gasoline tax?

First Nations individuals and bands do not have to pay gasoline tax if they use their valid gas card when they buy gasoline for their own use, from an authorized gasoline retailer on a reserve.

To get a gas card, you need to be a First Nations individual who has a Certificate of Indian Status card issued by Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada, or a First Nations band.

Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada issues a Temporary Confirmation of Registration document to newly registered individuals. This document may be used as proof of your registration, until you receive a status card.

To get a gas card, you need to complete an Application for Certificate of Exemption for First Nations Individuals and include a copy of your status card with your completed application form.
